The Bærtling Scholarship 2021

Inez Jönsson was born in 1989 in Stockholm, where she also lives and works. She obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 2017 and has studied at Gerlesborgsskolan in Stockholm.

Inez Jönsson receives the Bærtling Scholarship in 2021 for her consistently and meticulously executed paintings, where motifs and materials are literally woven together. Horsehair, linen, cotton canvas, and self-made stretcher frames are assembled into strictly geometric forms. Together, they create artworks that can be described as both paintings and objects.

Like Olle Bærtling, Inez Jönsson explores different boundaries. While Bærtling sought an open form, where paintings increasingly became excerpts of a larger environment, Jönsson balances between painting and object. In both cases, the possibilities of art are expanded through a concentrated and stringent visual language.
